We have a plan!

Yep, a plan of action!

We know we have been a little quiet of late, here, twitter, Facebook and event he website is silent! I bet you thought we were gone! Well we kind of had, in a physical 'see us' type way, but I am sure you will be pleased to know that in an actual way, we are still here!

We have had a silence on the public front because we are in the background, planning, working out, sorting the re-launch of Piddley Pix!

So what's the plan? Well, I can't say too much, you want a little surprise (don't you?!), but I will share that it *may* include a new fun, easier to use website, that we *may* have new products with brand spanking new designs for you to choose from and we have, i mean *may* have a brilliant new logo!

So, please do keep your eyes peeled, as over the next few weeks - you will see us back more and more, you will see the new stuff and hopefully it will mean you enjoy your shopping experience more!

Budgeting for Christmas: How to Prioritise Your Spending

The holiday season is a time for giving — and for most of us, this means that it’s a crucial time for setting budgetary priorities as well. If there’s a toy, video game or special item that your child wants, chances are that it’s probably going to be expensive. Make sure you can afford the absolute essentials — such as that cherished toy, or the beautiful jumper you want for your sister, or the long-desired, high tech tablet for your spouse — by saving money on other items. Buy gift-wrap, tape and ribbon at discount stores; likewise save on seasonal foods by clipping vouchers and looking at weekly sales updates.

The same holds true with decorations; resist the temptation to buy that brilliant-but-expensive mechanical Father Christmas or that utterly scrummy gourmet Christmas cake and put the money towards a special gift on someone’s list. By using this approach, you’ll be able to save money for the important things; your children and loved ones will get the gifts they really want, and you’ll have the supreme satisfaction of being able to afford to give them.

Stores generally continue to offer their best sale prices right up until the big day, because they need to get their inventory down before the New Year. Take advantage of these sale prices and shop around until you get the best deal. Likewise, if you’re shopping online with a certain retailer, do an Internet search to see if that retailer has any discount promotional codes; these codes often aren’t advertised on the retailer’s website, and sometimes they offer really substantial savings. Shopping on auction sites such as eBay is also a great way to find bargains, particularly on popular toys of the season. Quite often these toys are offered at a “buy it now” price, and even with shipping costs, you can save as much as half of what the toy would cost in a retail store.

If you’re out shopping, take a detour from the shopping centres and check out your local charity shops. While it might take some searching, these shops can yield everything from still-tagged, unworn designer clothing to new-in-the-box, unused toys. Likewise, consignment shops can sometimes be a good source for brand new clothing and accessories.

If you’ve got a talent for knitting or crocheting, then stock up on good quality yarn when it’s on sale and choose a few simple shawl or afghan patterns that you can make up quickly and economically with just a few skeins of yarn. It’s a lovely — and money saving — way to show someone that you cared enough to make something especially for them. Likewise, if cooking is your forte, bake up batches of Christmas cakes, festive biscuits, or anything else you’re good at, and fill holiday tins with these treats. At Christmastime, food is always appreciated, especially when it’s homemade — and you’ll be able to make these goodies at a fraction of the cost of buying them.

Gift baskets are also a welcome gift, whether filled with food, bath salts and soaps or linens and kitchenware. Shop sales and clearances to stock up on appealing and trendy items, then parcel them out into inexpensive-yet-attractive baskets — thrift stores and charity shops always have plenty of these — and cover the whole with clear or coloured cellophane topped off with a huge bow—and voila! You have an expensive-looking luxury gift basket at a budget price.

By using some of these tips — and coming up with a few of your own — you’re sure to be able to shave a bit off of your Christmas spending. This way, you’ll be able to better afford that expensive toy your child is longing for this year. And, if you save enough on the non-essentials, you might even be able to treat yourself to that scrummy gourmet Christmas cake after all.

Guest Post - Daisychain Baby Ltd

Sitting at my desk in my “day job”  lunch break, writing this guest post for lovely Kelly at Piddley Pix and looking at the rain pouring down outside, I feel a bit like a spy with a secret life. The reality is that sometimes I’d rather be anywhere than here, and that’s why you’ll sometimes see me sneaking on to Twitter or Facebook, using my alias “DaisychainBaby”. It’s the pipedream me, the alter ego that allows me to be freed from my rather geeky full-time day job bland shackles and soar off into a world of colour, clothing, running my business and selling at markets. For in my alternate universe, I sell organic clothing for 0-5 year olds, and love it.

It’s been just over 3 years now since I started having some random ideas about starting a business, fuelled by a selling purge on Ebay as the hubby and I raised funds for our wedding. I got a buzz from ridding the house of boxes of junk, although little did I know that just a few months later I’d be replacing them with boxes of stock. I don’t even know to this day why I became so determined that I could make it work, that it was well within my reach to run a business, after all so many other people do. We launched in November 2008, well into the recession, and somehow as we approach our 3rd birthday STILL in recession, I’m proud and delighted that we’re still going strong.

I’m very honest and realistic about the pressures of trying to keep a business going, be it large or small, especially in these very tough economic times. Over the years there has been unbridled optimism almost immediately replaced by the reality of life. It’s why I’ve maintained right from the start that I wanted the business to grow organically and well within my capabilities. I never expected to make a million, but as time goes by our customer base grows, we get more repeat custom and such lovely feedback that the sleepless nights I used to have worrying about it are now firmly a thing of the past. I still panic each year about cash flow when all the new stock invoices need paying all at the same time and normally at a very quiet point of the year for sales, but over the year it all evens out and I traipse off to Bubble (a tradeshow for children’s clothing and other items) twice annually to say hello to my suppliers, look at all the lovely new things I can’t afford and get very excited about it all. I’ve also come to realise my own limitations – many other small business owners have either: a) had high-flying power jobs that they’ve given up and have therefore thrown tens of thousands at their new venture, or have partners that can afford to do so (not me); b) come from some kind of super-duper journalist/PR/supremo background that means they have a little black book more impressive than that of Tiger Woods (not me); or c) already have a family that provides them a bit more flexibility time-wise and also a network in some cases depending on their target audience (not me).

Yet none of that stops me from pushing forward, confident in the belief that I can make a true success of DaisychainBaby and one day in the future I’ll be able to write a guest post from the comfort of my own home, or a DaisychainBaby office (even better!) and my day job will be a distant memory. I have passion and support from wonderful family and friends – not to mention that surely this recession can’t last forever?! We’ve also just had our best-ever takings at the monthly market we attend in Ruislip this past Sunday, so we MUST be doing something right ;o) I fully admire anyone who starts up their own business from scratch – it’s taught me so much about myself and I’m sure others would say the same.

The very lovely Lins from Daisychain Baby has offered you a fac discount 20% off by quoting REVIEW at checkout! So what you waiting for, get shopping!

Colour me Fun - Review!

Sorry it has been a little while since our last post! We have been looking at Piddley Pix and re-focusing the business, more news to come on that soon!

Anyway, I was offered some lovely crayons to review and I know how much you like to hear about fab products, so thought I would tell you about them here!

Colour Me Fun sells crayons, simple? Boring? NO!! They come in all sorts of shapes from dinosaurs to ballet pumps, from love hearts to space invaders! They are awesome looking and come in fab colours too! I was lucky enough to be sent some Tetris ones, talk about flashback. I loved the look of them, really took me back to the days when I would sit and play the game for hours!

The crayons arrived really well packaged and looked lovely in a little drawstring bag. They are loved by both children and adults (I am sure my hubby has his eye on some space invader ones!).

All the crayons are hand-poured using only non-toxic, high quality melted Crayola® crayons and are perfect for so many occassions, birthday gifts, party favours or just because! We bought our nephew some car ones and he LOVES them!

Head over to Colour me Fun and check them out for yourself, well recommended! Also follow them on Twitter and Facebook for news on latest products and offers!
